Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -22.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial robot exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -16.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units), Germany (X units) and Belgium (X units) were the main destinations of industrial robot exports from Italy, with a combined 35% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Thailand, France, China, Brazil, Austria, Australia, the Czech Republic, Mexico and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +11,375.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for industrial robot exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 40% share of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Australia, China, Thailand, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Austria and Djibouti lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +117.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average industrial robot export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Djibouti ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, the amount of industrial robots for multiple uses imported into Italy soared to X units, picking up by 20% on the year before. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -7.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, industrial robot imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -11.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany (X units), Sweden (X units) and Luxembourg (X units) were the main suppliers of industrial robot imports to Italy, with a combined 80% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +67.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Luxembourg ($X) and Sweden ($X) constituted the largest industrial robot suppliers to Italy, with a combined 68% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +75.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average industrial robot import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the price for Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
