The Italian iron and steel market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of iron and steel increased by 69% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, iron and steel exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of iron and steel exports from Italy, together accounting for 65% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Tunisia, Romania, India, Brazil, Hungary and France, which together accounted for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +85.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Austria ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for iron and steel exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania, Tunisia, France, Croatia, Poland, India, Brazil and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +48.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average iron and steel export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, iron and steel export price increased by +84.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 39%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of iron and steel, when their volume increased by 33% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron and steel imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of iron and steel imports to Italy, with a combined 87% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Australia, Germany and Croatia, which together accounted for a further 10%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Australia (with a CAGR of +106,363,211.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest iron and steel suppliers to Italy were Ukraine ($X), Russia ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 86% of total imports. India, Australia, Germany and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Australia, with a CAGR of +801,841.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
