Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lard imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Switzerland (X tons) constituted the largest lard supplier to Italy, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, lard imports from Switzerland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X tons), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Switzerland stood at +137.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-10.7% per year) and Austria (+97.8% per year).
In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lard to Italy, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Switzerland amounted to +103.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-11.8% per year) and Austria (+132.4% per year).

In 2022, the average lard import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lard import price increased by +116.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
