In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard exports from Italy, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States amounted to +3.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+2.6% per year) and Poland (+18.7% per year).

Imports into Italy
In 2021, overseas purchases of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard increased by 13% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 88%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper making machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X units), China (X units) and France (X units) were the main suppliers of paper making machinery imports to Italy, together accounting for 50% of total imports. Turkey, Taiwan (Chinese), Spain, South Korea, Egypt, Cyprus, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +141.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard to Italy, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +5.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+10.4% per year) and Turkey (+36.2% per year).

In 2021, the average paper making machinery import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 37% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per unit), while the price for Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
