In value terms, maize imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Italy, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+3.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest maize suppliers to Italy were Spain ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Germany, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Bangladesh, Algeria, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +33.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 15%.
