Maize Market Size in Italy

In 2022, the Italian maize market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of maize in Italy rose to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 4.6% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, overseas shipments of maize increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 219%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +128.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 58%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Italy, together accounting for 57% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +71.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Greece ($X), Spain ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest markets for maize exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 39% share of total exports. France, Romania, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey, Germany, Albania, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +71.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average maize export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -13.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 84% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of maize, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, maize imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Italy, with a combined 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +154.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest maize suppliers to Italy were Ukraine ($X), Hungary ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +158.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per ton) and Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
