France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of malt exports from Italy, together comprising 47% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +188.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X) were the largest markets for malt exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for 56% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Albania (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, the amount of malt (not roasted) imported into Italy rose sharply to X tons, surging by 8.3% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of malt imports to Italy, with a combined 88% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, which accounted for a further 6.1%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +62.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest malt suppliers to Italy, with a combined 86% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, which accounted for a further 6.9%.
Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +47.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 9.2%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Greece ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
