Mattress Market Size in Italy

In 2022, the Italian mattress market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight setback. Mattress consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

France (X units) was the main destination for mattress exports from Italy, accounting for a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, mattress exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to France stood at +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+12.8% per year) and Germany (-10.4% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for mattresses exports from Italy, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+10.5% per year) and Germany (-11.2% per year).

The average mattress export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mattresses decreased by -27.5% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, mattress imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Poland (X units), France (X units) and Romania (X units) were the main suppliers of mattress imports to Italy, with a combined 48% share of total imports. China, Sweden, Turkey, Serbia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Malaysia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +139.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), France ($X) and Romania ($X) were the largest mattress suppliers to Italy, together accounting for 48% of total imports. China, Sweden, Turkey, Serbia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Malaysia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +144.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mattress import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 44% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($X per unit) and Denmark ($X per unit), while the price for Austria ($X per unit) and Romania ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
