In 2022, the Italian natural rubber and gum market increased by 22% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Natural rubber and gum consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of natural rubber and gums, when their volume decreased by -21.1% to X tons. In general, total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, natural rubber and gum exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -8.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for natural rubber and gum exports from Italy, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, natural rubber and gum exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), fivefold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia stood at +16.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+95.1% per year) and Hungary (+6.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for natural rubber and gum exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 66% share of total exports.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +86.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average natural rubber and gum export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 33%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of natural rubber and gums increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, natural rubber and gum imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of natural rubber and gum imports to Italy, together accounting for 70% of total imports. Guatemala, Thailand, the Netherlands, Ghana and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +270.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest natural rubber and gum suppliers to Italy were Malaysia ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Guatemala, Thailand, the Netherlands, Ghana and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +257.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average natural rubber and gum import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
