Nitrates Market Size in Italy

After two years of decline, the Italian nitrates market increased by 38% to $X in 2021. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, nitrates exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of nitrates exports from Italy, together comprising 44% of total exports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Indonesia, Finland, North Macedonia, El Salvador, Romania, France, the UK, the Czech Republic and China, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +1,166.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for nitrates (excluding those of potassium) exports from Italy, comprising 20% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by El Salvador ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Spain amounted to +43.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+6.6% per year) and Denmark (+56.4% per year).

In 2021, the average nitrates export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+22.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) increased by 37% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 188%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, nitrates imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Norway (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of nitrates imports to Italy, together accounting for 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Russia and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +104.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), China ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest nitrates suppliers to Italy, together comprising 53% of total imports. These countries were followed by Norway, Russia and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +100.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
