The Italian soft drink market shrank to $X in 2021, dropping by -9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. In 2021, overseas purchases of soft drinks increased by 19% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Austria (X litres) constituted the largest soft drink supplier to Italy, with a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X litres), with an 8% share.

In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Italy, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Austria stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+6.1% per year) and Germany (-1.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 12%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per litre), while the price for Romania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
