Papaya Market Size in Italy

The Italian papaya market shrank dramatically to $X in 2022, declining by -15.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +14.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of papayas, when their volume increased by 50% to X tons. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 205%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 101%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Slovenia (X tons), France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of papaya exports from Italy, together accounting for 48% of total exports. The UK, Lithuania, Croatia, Malta, Belgium, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +77.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovenia ($X), Austria ($X) and Croatia ($X) constituted the largest markets for papaya exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports. France, Spain, Malta, Lithuania, Belgium, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +61.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -17.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of papayas imported into Italy contracted sharply to X tons, falling by -15.9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +8.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of papaya to Italy, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+42.8% per year) and the Netherlands (-8.2% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to Italy, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+43.3% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.3% per year).

In 2022, the average papaya import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 5%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
