After two years of decline, the Italian patent leather market increased by 15% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The exports peaked at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, patent leather exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X square meters), Romania (X square meters) and the United States (X square meters) were the main destinations of patent leather exports from Italy, together accounting for 37% of total exports. These countries were followed by Portugal, Vietnam, Albania, Spain, India, Slovakia, Tunisia, South Korea, Serbia and Germany, which together accounted for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +28.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for patent leather exported from Italy were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 39% of total exports. Vietnam, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, India, Tunisia, Albania, Germany, Serbia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +23.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average patent leather export price amounted to $X per square meter, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 3.8%. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Albania (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
