Piper Pepper Market Size in Italy

In 2022, the Italian piper pepper market increased by 1.3% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Piper pepper consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of piper pepper exported from Italy amounted to X tons, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, piper pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +7.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Italy, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK stood at +24.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-15.4% per year) and Germany (+8.7% per year).

In 2022, the average piper pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of piper pepper decreased by -3.9% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 11%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, piper pepper imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
