The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from Italy, together comprising 46% of total exports. France, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Poland and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +10.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for canned food exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 44% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Canada and Poland, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Canada, with a CAGR of +8.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 5.8%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of canned food decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned food imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 9.9%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to Italy, with a combined 48% share of total imports. Greece, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Morocco and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the largest canned food suppliers to Italy, with a combined 47% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Morocco and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Hungary, with a CAGR of +30.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average canned food import price stood at $X per ton in 2020, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
