Quinoa Market Size in Italy
The Italian quinoa market fell rapidly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -23.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a prominent increase. Quinoa consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Italy recorded growth in overseas shipments of quinoa, which increased by 4.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 257%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, quinoa exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 171%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
France (X tons) was the main destination for quinoa exports from Italy, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, quinoa exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sweden (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France stood at +22.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+243.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+147.3% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for quinoa exports from Italy, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Sweden, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +20.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+140.0% per year) and Sweden (+187.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average quinoa export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 34%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, approx. X tons of quinoa were imported into Italy; with a decrease of -10.2% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 77%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, quinoa imports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 149% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest quinoa supplier to Italy, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, quinoa imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bolivia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru stood at +21.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bolivia (+23.3% per year) and France (+26.0% per year).
In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of quinoa to Italy, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Bolivia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +16.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+20.7% per year) and Bolivia (+15.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average quinoa import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -11.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
