Rare Earth Metal Market Size in Italy
The Italian rare earth metal market was estimated at $X in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 4,956% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rare earth metal exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a sharp decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 5,810% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons) was the main destination for rare earth metal exports from Italy, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, rare earth metal exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania totaled +43.3%.
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for rare earth metals exports from Italy, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Serbia ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania stood at +53.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average rare earth metal export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 37% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 166%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+198.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rare Earth Metal Imports
Imports into Italy
In 2021, imports of rare earth metals into Italy skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 48% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 164%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rare earth metal imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 162%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Austria (X tons) and the United States (X kg) were the main suppliers of rare earth metal imports to Italy, together accounting for 95% of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), France and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 4%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rare earth metal suppliers to Italy were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Austria ($X), together comprising 89% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.7%.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +37.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average rare earth metal import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -53.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 405%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+56.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
