China (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of cattle hide and skin exports from Italy, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Germany, Slovakia, France, the Czech Republic, Nigeria, Indonesia, Poland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 53%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +47.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cattle hide and skin to Italy, with a 24% share of total imports. Moreover, cattle hide and skin imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.6% per year) and Spain (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest cattle hide and skin suppliers to Italy, with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Argentina and the United States, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +113.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
