Recovered Paper Market Size in Italy

In 2022, the Italian recovered paper market increased by 0.3% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible decrease. In value terms, recovered paper exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a mild descent. India (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of recovered paper exports from Italy, together comprising 58% of total exports. Austria, Turkey, Vietnam, Switzerland, Egypt, Slovenia, Hungary, Lao People's Democratic Republic, France and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Over the period under review, export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, recovered paper export price increased by +78.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 51% against the previous year. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest recovered paper supplier to Italy, with a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, recovered paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-3.5% per year) and Germany (-4.4% per year).
