After three years of decline, shipments abroad of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor increased by 51% to X units in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 116%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sailboat exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 94%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X units), Cayman Islands (X units) and Spain (X units) were the main destinations of sailboat exports from Italy, with a combined 36% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, France, the United States, the UK, Turkey, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Cuba and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +49.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Croatia ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for sailboat exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for 30% of total exports. Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Cayman Islands, the UK, Germany, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +57.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sailboat export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -25.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 57%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, the amount of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor imported into Italy expanded markedly to X units, surging by 14% on 2020. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sailboat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Finland (X units) constituted the largest sailboat supplier to Italy, with a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, sailboat imports from Finland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X units), threefold. France (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Finland totaled +29.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-0.9% per year) and France (+1.0% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor to Italy, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by British Virgin Islands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France totaled +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+22.1% per year) and British Virgin Islands (+86.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sailboat import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
