In 2021, shipments abroad of screwdrivers increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -22.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, screwdriver exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 43%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of screwdriver exports from Italy, with a combined 42% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Poland, Belgium, Slovenia, Turkey, Austria, Mexico, Malta, Hungary and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +73.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for screwdriver exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Poland, Mexico, Austria, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Belgium, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary and Malta lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +66.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average screwdriver export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, screwdriver export price increased by +14.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of screwdrivers increased by 24% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, screwdriver imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of screwdriver to Italy, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, screwdriver imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+3.2% per year) and France (+3.3% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest screwdriver suppliers to Italy, with a combined 53% share of total imports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average screwdriver import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -26.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 63%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
