The Italian sulphur market fell sharply to $X in 2021, shrinking by -18.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced increase. Sulphur consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sulphur exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 181%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for sulphur exports from Italy, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphur exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Greece (X tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Croatia stood at -8.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-3.7% per year) and Greece (+31.1% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur exports from Italy, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Croatia stood at -7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+30.5% per year) and Greece (+32.7% per year).

In 2021, approx. X tons of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur were imported into Italy; with a decrease of -31% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 241% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphur imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 170%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
