The Italian tea market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Malta (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from Italy, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to Malta exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with an 8.7% share.

In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Italy were France ($X), Malta ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 35% of total exports. Germany, Poland, Spain, the UK, Greece, the United States, Portugal, Belgium, Austria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +35.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 43%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, tea imports into Italy reduced slightly to X tons, waning by -2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tea suppliers to Italy were Spain ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 45% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
