Exports from Italy
In 2021, shipments abroad of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons increased by 146% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 299% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tons) was the main destination for unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from Italy, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports to Switzerland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), sixfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Switzerland amounted to +66.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+11.1% per year) and Thailand (+8.1% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X), Turkey ($X) and Switzerland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for 45% of total exports. Spain, Slovakia and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +70.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -53.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 165%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+38.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, the amount of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imported into Italy contracted rapidly to X tons, declining by -35.1% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons to Italy, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Qatar (X tons), fourfold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States amounted to +78.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (-6.1% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-7.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons to Italy, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled +73.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (-12.1% per year) and Belgium (-21.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
