The Italian unvulcanised rubber market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In 2021, shipments abroad of unvulcanised rubber was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, unvulcanised rubber exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of unvulcanised rubber exports from Italy, with a combined 47% share of total exports. Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Spain, China, Serbia, Slovenia, Brazil, Estonia and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +81.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for unvulcanised rubber exported from Italy were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 47% of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, Hungary, Spain, Turkey, Serbia, Slovenia, Estonia, Brazil, China and India, which together accounted for a further 37%.
Estonia, with a CAGR of +73.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average unvulcanised rubber export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Italy
In 2021, purchases abroad of unvulcanised rubber was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -33.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unvulcanised rubber imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of unvulcanised rubber imports to Italy, with a combined 61% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +263.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Thailand ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest unvulcanised rubber suppliers to Italy, together comprising 63% of total imports.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +218.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average unvulcanised rubber import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
