After three years of decline, the Italian wheelchair market increased by 30% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Wheelchair consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +19.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheelchair exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Spain (X units), the United States (X units) and Romania (X units) were the main destinations of wheelchair exports from Italy, together accounting for 25% of total exports. The UK, Israel, Germany, Slovenia, France, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

The average wheelchair export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
