Imports into Italy
In 2022, overseas purchases of whey increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, whey imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Greece (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of whey imports to Italy, together comprising 63% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +116.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
