Cotton Fabric Market Size in Italy

The Italian cotton fabric market surged to $X in 2021, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Cotton fabric consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of woven fabrics of cotton was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of cotton fabric exports from Italy, with a combined 26% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Albania, Romania, France, Morocco, the United States, Vietnam, Portugal, Bulgaria and Poland, which together accounted for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +30.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cotton fabric exported from Italy were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 25% of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, Germany, Turkey, the United States, Morocco, Albania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Vietnam and Poland, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Among the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cotton fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 9.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Morocco (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Italy

After five years of decline, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Pakistan (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton fabric imports to Italy, with a combined 64% share of total imports. India, Germany, Spain, Egypt, Turkmenistan, Hungary, Slovenia, Tunisia, Belgium and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +48.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Turkey ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest cotton fabric suppliers to Italy, together accounting for 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, India, Spain, Hungary, Egypt, Belgium, Tunisia, Slovenia, Turkmenistan and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Turkmenistan, with a CAGR of +33.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cotton fabric import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 3.2%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
