Antisera Market Size in Japan
In 2021, the Japanese antisera market decreased by -20.2% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Antisera Production in Japan
In value terms, antisera production dropped remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of antisera and other blood fractions increased by 7.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +15.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, antisera exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 116%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of antisera exports from Japan, with a combined 39% share of total exports. China, the UK, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Singapore, India, Mozambique and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X) remains the key foreign market for antisera and other blood fractions exports from Japan, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Switzerland stood at +12.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+25.0% per year) and Germany (+36.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average antisera export price amounted to $X per kg, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per kg, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+26.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of antisera and other blood fractions, when their volume decreased by -7.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, antisera imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest antisera supplier to Japan, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, antisera imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), ninefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+9.0% per year) and Germany (+4.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), Ireland ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest antisera suppliers to Japan, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Switzerland, South Korea, the Netherlands, China and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +78.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average antisera import price amounted to $X per kg, growing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per kg), while the price for China ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+45.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
