Stationery Market Size in Japan

In 2022, the Japanese stationery market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, consumption saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2.1%. Stationery consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 5.5%. Stationery production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of articles of stationery were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 23%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons), China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of stationery exports from Japan, together comprising 50% of total exports. The Netherlands, Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Canada and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +57.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the largest markets for stationery exported from Japan worldwide, together comprising 58% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +36.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average stationery export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Japan

After five years of decline, supplies from abroad of articles of stationery increased by 1.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1.4% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2.3%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of stationery imports to Japan, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of -0.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the largest stationery suppliers to Japan, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of -4.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average stationery import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
