Bicycle Market Size in Japan

In 2021, the Japanese bicycle market increased by 16% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a deep downturn. Bicycle consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bicycle Production in Japan

In value terms, bicycle production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Bicycle production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Japan

Bicycle exports from Japan declined to X units in 2021, waning by -6.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 7.8% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle exports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Ghana (X units), Cambodia (X units) and Tanzania (X units) were the main destinations of bicycle exports from Japan, with a combined 54% share of total exports. The Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iraq, Nigeria, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +135.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cambodia ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for bicycle exported from Japan worldwide, together accounting for 52% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Myanmar, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Among the main countries of destination, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +103.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average bicycle export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 6.3%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan

After eight years of decline, overseas purchases of bicycles and other cycles increased by 3.4% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) was the main bicycle supplier to Japan, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), with a 1.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -3.4%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bicycles and other cycles to Japan, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to -1.8%.

The average bicycle import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit), while the price for China stood at $X per unit.
