After three years of decline, the Japanese bismuth market increased by 24% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the sixth consecutive year, Japan recorded growth in shipments abroad of bismuth, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, bismuth exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for bismuth exports from Japan, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, bismuth exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Luxembourg (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X tons), with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea stood at +32.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (0.0% per year) and Belgium (-7.4% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for bismuth exported from Japan were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Luxembourg ($X), together accounting for 83% of total exports. Germany, Taiwan (Chinese), the United States and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +222.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average bismuth export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+22.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Bismuth Imports
Imports into Japan
In 2021, approx. X tons of bismuth were imported into Japan; jumping by 70% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 236%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, bismuth imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 123%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest bismuth supplier to Japan, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, bismuth imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-2.8% per year) and France (+11.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bismuth to Japan, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to -5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-13.7% per year) and France (+2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average bismuth import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a deep reduction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
