The Japanese book and brochure market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -4.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Book and brochure consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Japan
In 2022, overseas shipments of books, brochures and similar printed matter increased by 9.2% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, book and brochure exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 7.9%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X units), the United States (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units) were the main destinations of book and brochure exports from Japan, together accounting for 38% of total exports. Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, Australia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for book and brochure exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 56% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, South Africa, Indonesia and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, South Africa, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average book and brochure export price amounted to $X per unit, declining by -12.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 38%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of books, brochures and similar printed matter decreased by -21.1% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, book and brochure imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 20%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of book and brochure to Japan, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, book and brochure imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X units), twofold. The United States (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+7.8% per year) and the United States (-9.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest book and brochure suppliers to Japan, together comprising 69% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average book and brochure import price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
