Brassiere Market Size in Japan

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Japanese brassiere market, when its value increased by 13% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild curtailment. Brassiere consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brassiere production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 194%. China (X units) was the main destination for brassiere exports from Japan, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, brassiere exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), twofold. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +21.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.0% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for brassiere exported from Japan were China ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 77% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +48.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Brassiere imports into Japan fell modestly to X units in 2021, declining by -3.2% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.4%. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brassiere imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest brassiere supplier to Japan, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, brassiere imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), fivefold.
