China (X tons) was the main destination for breakfast cereal exports from Japan, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, breakfast cereal exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), fourfold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +93.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+152.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+19.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for breakfast cereal exports from Japan, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at +85.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+147.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+24.5% per year).

The average breakfast cereal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -29.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of breakfast cereals, when their volume decreased by -1.9% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +32.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, breakfast cereal imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +32.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Belgium (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of breakfast cereal imports to Japan, with a combined 63% share of total imports. China, Thailand, Germany, the Czech Republic, France, the UK, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +101.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the United States ($X) and Australia ($X) appeared to be the largest breakfast cereal suppliers to Japan, together accounting for 61% of total imports. China, France, South Korea, Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese) and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +86.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average breakfast cereal import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 4.3% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
