Ceramic Tile Market Size in Japan

In 2022, the Japanese ceramic tile market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. Ceramic tile consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Ceramic tile exports from Japan contracted to X square meters in 2022, waning by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -30.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X square meters) was the main destination for ceramic tile exports from Japan, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, ceramic tile exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X square meters), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR (X square meters), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at +20.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+14.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for ceramic tiles exports from Japan, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 9% share.

In 2022, the average ceramic tile export price amounted to $X per square meter, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, overseas purchases of ceramic tiles were finally on the rise to reach X square meters after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

China (X square meters), the Philippines (X square meters) and Italy (X square meters) were the main suppliers of ceramic tile imports to Japan, with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Spain and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Thailand ($X per square meter) and Vietnam ($X per square meter), while the price for the Philippines ($X per square meter) and China ($X per square meter) were amongst the lowest.
