Cheese Market Size in Japan

The Japanese cheese market amounted to $X in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cheese exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from Japan, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to +20.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+10.4% per year) and Vietnam (+136.3% per year).

The average cheese export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cheese imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Australia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to Japan, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, France and Italy, which together accounted for a further 41%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 12%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
