Imports into Japan

In 2022, overseas purchases of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -70.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 214%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier to Japan, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, cigars and cigarillos imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold. The Dominican Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia totaled +48.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+42.7% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos to Japan, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Indonesia stood at +50.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Dominican Republic (+7.3% per year) and South Korea (+43.4% per year).

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 26%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
