Green Coffee Market Size in Japan

The Japanese green coffee market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, increasing by 25% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Japan

In 2022, shipments abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -74.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 514%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, green coffee exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,901%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X kg) was the main destination for green coffee exports from Japan, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, green coffee exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Macao SAR (X kg), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR stood at +60.7%.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Macao SAR ($X) were the largest markets for green coffee exported from Japan worldwide.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +22.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -60.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 381% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+28.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Japan

In 2022, green coffee imports into Japan fell to X tons, declining by -3.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to Japan, together comprising 68% of total imports. Ethiopia, Guatemala, Indonesia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee suppliers to Japan were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Guatemala, Tanzania and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +11.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average green coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 41% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
