Totaliser Market Size in Japan

The Japanese totaliser market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a slight reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 37%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of continuous and discontinuous totalisers increased by 0.5% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The United States (X units) was the main destination for totaliser exports from Japan, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, totaliser exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Indonesia (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X units), with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+5.3% per year) and the UK (+15.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for continuous and discontinuous totalisers exports from Japan, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +6.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+5.8% per year) and the UK (+14.3% per year).

The average totaliser export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 89%. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X units), South Korea (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main suppliers of totaliser imports to Japan, together comprising 80% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), France and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average totaliser import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
