Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products from Japan, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Korea (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of raw steel and steel semi-finished products to Japan, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), fourfold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Korea stood at -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+311.8% per year) and Indonesia (+156.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest raw steel and steel semi-finished products suppliers to Japan were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 89% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +167.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
