Micronesia (X tons) was the main destination for unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports from Japan, with a 54% share of total exports. In 2021, the amount of unroasted decaffeinated coffee imported into Japan skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 39% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +52.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports to Japan, with a combined 41% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Ethiopia, Canada, Rwanda, Germany, Tanzania and El Salvador, which together accounted for a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +54.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Colombia ($X), Brazil ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest unroasted decaffeinated coffee suppliers to Japan, together comprising 40% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Ethiopia, Canada, Rwanda, Germany, Tanzania and El Salvador, which together accounted for a further 19%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of +45.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average unroasted decaffeinated coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
