Imports into Japan
In 2021, purchases abroad of dog and cat food increased by 1.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after seven years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dog and cat food imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dog and cat food to Japan, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, dog and cat food imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand stood at -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-10.8% per year) and China (-1.5% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dog and cat food to Japan, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.3% per year) and the United States (-11.0% per year).
