The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2,507%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Japan, accounting for a approx. 98% share of total exports.

Durum wheat imports into Japan contracted to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -4.5% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw pronounced growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) was the main supplier of durum wheat to Japan, with a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (0.0% per year) and the United States (+35.1% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Japan, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 2.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Canada stood at +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (0.0% per year) and the United States (+31.9% per year).

In general, import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +123.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
