In 2021, the Japanese diagnostic equipment market increased by 4.5% to $X, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Diagnostic equipment consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus exported from Japan expanded significantly to X units, surging by 6.1% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diagnostic equipment exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The United States (X units) was the main destination for diagnostic equipment exports from Japan, with a 365% share of total exports. Moreover, diagnostic equipment exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X units), threefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 121% share.

The average diagnostic equipment export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, the amount of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus imported into Japan surged to X units, picking up by 16% against 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, diagnostic equipment imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X.
