In value terms, electronic chip exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) were the main destinations of electronic chip exports from Japan, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the United States, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Germany, which together accounted for a further 48%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), China ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for electronic chip exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 65% share of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, the Philippines and Germany, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average electronic chip export price amounted to $X per unit, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, electronic chip imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) constituted the largest supplier of electronic chip to Japan, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic chip imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X units), sixfold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) totaled -1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-11.9% per year) and China (-4.2% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest supplier of electronic chips to Japan, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Taiwan (Chinese) stood at +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+6.2% per year) and the United States (-3.1% per year).

The average electronic chip import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($X per unit) and China ($X per unit), while the price for the Philippines ($X per unit) and Thailand ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
