Exports from Japan

In 2022, ethanol exports from Japan rose rapidly to X litres, growing by 13% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 71%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 83%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Philippines (X litres), Vietnam (X litres) and China (X litres) were the main destinations of ethanol exports from Japan, together comprising 57% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), China ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest markets for ethanol exported from Japan worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average ethanol export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+59.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X litres of ethyl alcohol were imported into Japan; surging by 3.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X litres) constituted the largest ethanol supplier to Japan, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, ethanol imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X litres), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X litres), with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil totaled +12.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+20.0% per year) and South Africa (+108.3% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethyl alcohol to Japan, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil amounted to +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+15.9% per year) and South Africa (+99.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Pakistan ($X per litre) and the United States ($X per litre), while the price for South Africa ($X per litre) and Brazil ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (-2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
