In 2021, the Japanese plastic extruder market decreased by -57.9% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Japan recorded growth in overseas shipments of extruders for working rubber or plastics, which increased by 2.7% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 269% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic extruder exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

China (X units) was the main destination for plastic extruder exports from Japan, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic extruder exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X units), fivefold. South Korea (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +31.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+59.6% per year) and South Korea (+20.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for extruders for working rubber or plastics exports from Japan, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+28.3% per year) and South Korea (-0.6% per year).

The average plastic extruder export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In general, imports, however, enjoyed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic extruder imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of plastic extruder to Japan, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic extruder imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), fourfold.
