In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Japanese preserved fish fillet market, when its value decreased by -3.6% to $X. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved fish fillet exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 53%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved fish fillet exports from Japan, together accounting for 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for preserved fish fillet exported from Japan were Hong Kong SAR ($X), the United States ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved fish fillet imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 193% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
