The Japanese market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines fell to $X in 2021, waning by -10.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep slump. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from Japan, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X tons), threefold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +28.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+3.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from Japan were China ($X), Norway ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 49% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Italy, Germany, the United States, South Korea, the UK, France and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.
Singapore, with a CAGR of +37.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Israel (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine to Japan, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports from Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Israel stood at -5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (-13.1% per year) and Jordan (-9.3% per year).
In value terms, Israel ($X), Chile ($X) and Jordan ($X) were the largest fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine suppliers to Japan, together accounting for 93% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Jordan, with a CAGR of -0.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average import price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -28.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 53% against the previous year.
